Daily Ranking - The Foreign Born With Science and Engineering Degrees

The Census folks have a report just out: The Foreign Born With Science and Engineering Degrees: 2010

Of all the regions they look at, the one with the highest percentage of the foreign born population with a bachelor's degree and higher, and the highest percentage with a science or engineering degree is.........   well, see table 4.

The thing here is...  it isn't even close.

The report did not technically do the ranking, but if you take their table directly I come up with this:

We're also 5th from the bottom in terms of number of foreign-born residents over 25.

When you think about what sorts of economic opportunities have been available here in recent decades, both the overall low immigration rate and high educational attainment among the immigrants we do get makes ample sense--and of course it mirrors dynamics among the native-born as well.

The trick will be improving the overall rate of immigration to Pittsburgh (which is a good idea for multiple reasons) while not slipping too far in terms of measures like these. Fortunately, I think changes in the overall, national, immigration dynamic might help toward that end.

Hate to say it, but all that means is that the native born population has to buy a lot of those "something for dummies" books.

Way behind the curve here - it is an intriguing statistic...but (and there is always a but) as another commented, the percentage masks another statistic - that PGH only has estimated 58000 foreign born, so the total number comes in at ~18K; so other metro areas might have a smaller percentage BUT they have a much larger pool....the good news for the future is that word can spread, etc - but for now, taking a deeper look is important.
